Infinity: Merc Stories
The Circulating Space Ships or Circulars, are the arteries of life in the Human Sphere. Transporting people and merchandise from one part of the known galaxy to another, these enormous ships make it possible for Humanity to keep in contact and stay united despite the distances involved and the vastness of the coldest regions of deep Space.
Those times when supposedly fast aircraft crossed oceans and circled the globe in 24 hours – making stopovers on route – have long since passed. Back then, it was considered a scientific wonder that you could travel around the world, a single world, at speeds exceeding the speed of sound.
And though the people of those times would undoubtedly be surprised to see the advances made in terms of travel, the idea, the concept behind the Circulars wouldn’t in any way be alien to them. They would see the similarity between our interstellar transports and their old railway systems and underground urban transport networks, the predecessors of our metro system. And they wouldn’t be mistaken…
When space engineers faced the challenge of designing an interstellar ship with jump capabilities that would simultaneously serve as a multiuse transport, they looked for solutions from the beginnings of Engineering.
Just like the old railways, the Circulars consist of multiple wagons pulled by a locomotive machine along a fixed track formed by the worm holes. While in those days trains carried a few hundred passengers at most, the Circulars are the size of a small city.
Each one of them can hold a large number of smaller inter-system ships, launching platforms and even the enormous mother ships of the Nomad Nation.
